Opening Day
The Red Sox won their home opener and all is right in the universe. Is there a Tweetworks group for your MLB team? If not, why not? Set one up.
I also posed a few questions during the show for you to tweet about. Think innovation, grammar and social media.
Featured Groups and Discussions:
- Red Sox Nation (created by Chad Northrup) – All Sox, all the time…
- Innovation (created by Stephen Shapiro) – I watched a great TED Talk video on the use of innovative design in the newspaper industry. It got me thinking about this same approached might be used in other industries. What do you think?
- Grammar Fascists United (created by ewangee) - Deeply reactionary bored bores. Seeing this group created made me wonder if it isn’t time to roll out some new grammatical rules that apply to social media communication. Are the rules that applied to Hemingway applicable to the blogger orTwitter user?
- Social Media (created by Avi Joseph) – Social Media And Web Strategists. Having received two alumni magazines in the last few days I couldn’t help but wonder why the education industry isn’t using social media to its fullest potential? If any industry should be able to knock it out of the park it’s the United States’ college system. But here I am getting alumni magazines and phone calls to donate. I log in to the Boston University Alumni community site and there is no Facebook, LinkedIn of Flickr integration. I don’t see anycontextual ads for relelvant products like BU t-shirts for my kids or even articles about college planning for the little ones. The natural affinity of the high school and colllege experience has provided this industry an obscenely unfair advantage in leveraging social media but they seem to be dropping the ball.
Tweetworks TV Episode 51 – A Shout Out to the Ladies
I met a fantastic lady named Lesley Lambert at PodCamp Western Mass who, in addition to being totally awesome in her own right, recently joined Tweetworks and set up a group called TwitterQueens. It seems Lesley and a group of ladies get their tweet on with the hashtag #TwitterQueens and she thought it might be a super cool idea to use Tweetworks for the group. She asked if I would profile the group on the show and I thought that was a fantastic idea. In fact, I thought a whole show celebrating the women focused groups on Tweetworks would be cool. So here we go!
Featured Groups:
- TwitterQueens (created by Lesley Lambert) – Social Media Vixens using the internet for fun, profit and glory!
- Muslimah (created by Aisha Abdurahman) - Muslim Women who use twitter
- StartupPrincess (created by Gwenn Bell) – If you are a lady starting a business then this group is for you. Be sure to check out Kelly King Anderson the lady behind StartupPrincess.
- Kirtsy (created by Gwenn Bell) – kirtsy lovers + friends: http://kirtsy.com
- Twitteritas (created by TheDiva) – Women who use Twitter
- WomenBloggers (created by Aisha Abdurahman) – Women who blog. What isn’t this group huge?
- WomensCouncilofRealtors (created by Christina Ethridge) - Women’s Council of Realtors
- BabiBoomers (created by Nancy Davis) – 50+women, your stories, advice, empty-nesters, health, retirement spots, anything you want.

- WomensNetworkOnline (created by Lynette Palmen) – Where businesswomen and ideas meet.
Tweetworks TV Episode 45 – SXSW Networking & MoveOn.org

This episode is a download of my networking experience at SXSW. I didn’t go to Austin to party (although I did a lot of that), I didn’t go to Austin for a trade show, and I didn’t go to attend sessions. I went with a very specific mission, to meet great people. The trip did not dissappoint. My networking started before I even stepped foot on Texas soil.
On the plane heading to Austin for SXSW I met an executive from MoveOn.org. We got to talking and it turns out they do not have a social media strategy. I found myself amazed that an organization with millions of people in its community is not leveraging the power of social media. I couldn’t help but wonder how much more effective and wide reaching they could be if they harnessed their community’s social web. I promised the gentleman I would enlist your help.
This is your chance to share what you know and possibly see it implemented on a grand scale. Please feel free to leave comments here with your thoughts or, if you prefer a more formal approach, email me and I’ll be sure to forward your strategic plan directly to MoveOn.org.

Sustainability of Social: The Financials
What makes us think that new media won’t experience the same problems as old media?
Newspapers have been around for a very long time. And the business model of charging the customer a small fee to receive something he valued worked extremely well for as long as printing presses have been rolling. The fee was kept small by advertisers subsidizing the cost because they valued getting their message in front of news consumer. Now of course the world has changed:
- Consumers are willing to pay for the pipe because they have to. Yes, you can get free WiFi but it usually requires you buy a cup of coffee at Panera Bread.
- Consumers have “bought” the notion that information is free. They really don’t care that it costs money to gather, analyze, format and distribute the information. I like free, don’t you?
- Consumers want to use services for free AND they want the privilege of being uninterrupted by advertising or any other attempt to create value for the producer or host. Do RSS and TiVo ring a bell?
- Consumers are still willing to pay for books (paper and electronic formats) however mostly because they are forced to by copyright law.
- Consumers are still willing to pay for entertainment. iTunes, CDs, DVDs, movies, shows and so on. Partly because of the copyright laws but mostly because people realized that pirating was wrong. Most honest people got over it and started paying for music downloads. Isn’t if funny how people feel bad about stealing from P. Diddy but journalists and software developers can suck it?
- Consumers are blissfully unaware that the tab is coming due. Does the insatiable thirst for “free and cheap” come with a cost?
I know, I know, the monetization question isn’t new. But, my concerns are more macro and systemic. I know it may seem way out there to imagine Facebook or LinkedIn going under but tell that to Bear Stearns, GM or the Chicago Tribune. Each of these companies at least had customers that were willing to pay for their products or services.
Do you think there would be a federal bailout if Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn were all on the verge of going under? Imagine the cost to people and businesses whom have come to rely on these services in their daily lives.
Should social media companies start a “If you use it, pay for it” campaign similar to the music artists who were stunned by Napster’s arrival almost a decade ago? Might some small fee like the 50 cents for a daily paper be applicable if not applaudable? Can you envision what new products and services might hit the market if people actually were financially rewarded for their work?
I’ll end by taking it up to 30,000 feet. How might the U.S. economy fair if we started thinking about economic stabibility of the services we rely on?
I hope you will share your thoughts, analysis and comments here with this post. I would also love to see you join me in the SoS group on Tweetworks to continue the conversation. Lastly, be sure to watch Episode 3 of Tweetworks TV to get more in depth on this issue.
